The morning mist was still lifting from the Hertfordshire Showgrounds in St. Albans when the first eager festival-goers began arriving at the gates on 26th July 2025.
What awaited them was more than just a music festival – it was a cultural homecoming that had been months in the making, destined to become the most successful Zimfest yet.

Zimfest 2025 represented the culmination of meticulous planning that began with production teams arriving at the beginning of the week, transforming the sprawling showgrounds into what would become the biggest Zimbabwean festival experience outside of Africa.

The infrastructure that emerged was nothing short of impressive – three distinct stages, carefully designed VIP areas, and amenities that set new standards for African festivals in the UK.

The festival’s magnetic pull

The festival’s magnetic pull extended far beyond British shores.

International travellers descended upon St. Albans from Canada, Australia, America, Germany, and Zimbabwe itself, contributing to an audience that exceeded 17,000 – the festival’s best attendance figures to date.

These weren’t just casual music fans – they were people willing to cross continents to experience the unique atmosphere that only Zimfest could provide.

The venue’s thoughtful design reflected the organisers’ commitment to creating memorable experiences for every ticket holder.

The VVIP area stood as a sanctuary of comfort, complete with its own dedicated bar and two food stalls, offering guests a premium festival experience with unparalleled access and amenities.

The VIP section maintained this elevated standard with its own bar, food vendors, and outdoor seating arrangements that allowed guests to enjoy the performances whilst maintaining their comfort.

But the heart of Zimfest beat strongest in the general admission areas, where the majority of attendees gathered in spirited celebration.

Here, the crowd flowed seamlessly between the main stage and the Piano Republic tent, each offering distinct yet complementary musical experiences that showcased the best of contemporary Zimbabwean and South African talent.

The festival’s programming demonstrated the organisers’ deep understanding of their audience. The main stage featured an exceptional lineup that began with emerging talents and built towards the evening’s crescendo.

Sharon Manatse and Busi Mhlanga delivered powerful early performances, whilst Oriyano TS and Nisha TS captivated audiences during the afternoon slots.

As evening approached, Jah Signal and Saintfloew raised the energy levels before headliner Winky D took the stage to close the main programme. Meanwhile, the Amapiano Republic tent offered its own stellar attractions, with Young Stunna delivering an electrifying performance before DJ Maphorisa’s headline set.

This carefully curated lineup brought together established stars and emerging talent, creating a musical journey that honoured tradition whilst embracing innovation. From the moment attendees approached the main gate, the festival experience began.

A DJ and MC stationed at the entrance gantry welcomed arrivals, immediately immersing visitors in the infectious energy that would define their day. This attention to the arrival experience set the tone for everything that followed.

The entrepreneurial spirit of the festival was evident in the diverse array of food stalls and vendors, many of which sold out completely – a testament to the enthusiasm of the crowd.

Mix of charities, sponsors, and entrepreneurs created a vibrant marketplace

The mix of charities, sponsors, and entrepreneurs created a vibrant marketplace that extended the festival experience beyond music into community engagement and cultural exchange.

The youth presence was particularly striking, with young festival-goers embracing the environment and contributing to the dynamic atmosphere.

The event served as a bridge between generations, allowing younger attendees to connect with their heritage whilst older participants shared in the energy of contemporary African music culture.

Celebrity appearances added another layer of excitement to the proceedings. Madam Boss, brand ambassador for Nyaradzo Group, drew crowds, her interactions with fans highlighting the deep personal connections that make Zimfest special.

The appearance of boxer Derrick Chisora further elevated the festival’s profile, demonstrating its appeal across different spheres of African achievement and entertainment.

What emerged throughout the day was a festival that succeeded on multiple levels – as a musical showcase, a cultural celebration, and a community gathering.

The seamless logistics, from parking to amenities, the vibrant atmosphere created by engaged crowds, and the memorable experiences crafted through thoughtful programming all contributed to an event that lived up to its billing as an exceptional African festival experience.

Zimfest 2025 proved that when heritage meets harmony, and when community comes together around shared cultural pride, the result is something truly magical – a festival that doesn’t just entertain, but enriches and connects.

With over 17,000 attendees celebrating African culture in the heart of Hertfordshire, this year’s festival set a new benchmark for what’s possible when vision meets execution.
