This week on the DSE News Network Entertainment: Don Franco Tafari has released the cinematic for Eriya — a powerful story rooted in African spiritual resistance.
Reggae Dancehall artist Don Franco Tafari told the DSE News Network this week that the striking cinematic music video — Eriya had taken time to make — but it was worth the effort.
The production blends music, storytelling, and historical symbolism to deliver a compelling narrative rooted in African heritage and spiritual resilience.
The video features a narration explaining the deeper meaning behind the song Eriya. Inspired by an ancient story, the narrative follows a young regent named Dzivarengwe Nyarutombo Mutapa, a figure who represents resistance, identity, and spiritual transformation.
According to the story Dzivarengwe is captured by a missionary during a violent period when many Africans who refused to convert were persecuted and killed.
Forced into submission, he is compelled to repent and is given the name Eriya (Elijah) during a baptism ritual. However, the ritual takes a tragic turn when he drowns during the baptism.
Rather than marking the end of his story, the moment becomes a spiritual rebirth.
In the narrative interpretation presented through the music video, Dzivarengwe returns as a mystical ancestral spirit—an entity that continues the struggle for African dignity and spiritual freedom from the ancestral realm. The story symbolizes resistance, cultural survival, and the enduring power of ancestral identity.
Set against a dramatic backdrop inspired by the closing era of the Christian Crusades—an age remembered for the violent persecution of non-Christians—the visual narrative explores themes of forced conversion, colonial influence, and spiritual defiance.
The music video production is shot with rich symbolism and dramatic storytelling.
It was shot, directed, and edited by Rebel Shumba, whose visual style brings the historical and spiritual themes of the story to life.
With this release, Don Franco Tafari continues to push creative boundaries within Reggae and Dancehall, using music not only as entertainment but also as a vehicle for cultural storytelling, historical reflection, and African consciousness.
