Zimbabwe Consul General in Johannesburg Hon Eria Phiri has underscored the importance of safe and legal travel for Zimbabweans travelling to and from South Africa.

In a statement and advisory released to the media this week, Consul General Phiri said the consulate – in collaboration with the South African Department of Social Development (DSD) and relevant stakeholders – had successfully profiled and facilitated the repatriation of thirty-three (33) Zimbabwean children who were intercepted on 13 January 2026 while travelling from various parts of South Africa to Masvingo, Zimbabwe.

“We would like to advise that the children, whose ages range from three (3) to sixteen (16) years, were travelling without proper accompaniment and/or the requisite travel documentation.

“Upon arrival in Zimbabwe on 23 January 2026, the children were formally handed over to the Department of Social Welfare in Beitbridge, for further assessment, protection, and safe reunification with their families, in line with national child protection frameworks,” the Consul General said.

He added that the Government of Zimbabwe placed the highest priority on the safety, dignity, and well-being of children.

“Parents, guardians, and transport operators are therefore strongly reminded that it is a legal requirement for all children to travel with valid travel documents and to be accompanied by their parents, legal guardians, or duly authorised adults,” he emphasised.

He said that compliance with these requirements is essential to safeguard children from harm, as illegal and irregular movement of children exposed them to serious risks, including trafficking, abuse, exploitation, neglect, detention, and loss of identity.

Such malpractices undermine children’s rights and may result in severe legal consequences for parents, guardians, and transport operators who facilitate unlawful travel.

In keeping with the national development philosophy of “leaving no one and no place behind,” the Government of Zimbabwe has since rolled out the E-passport service at the Johannesburg Consulate to enable Zimbabweans residing in South Africa to conveniently obtain passports and regularise travel

The Zimbabwe Consulate in Johannesburg urges all Zimbabwean nationals to plan travel responsibly, ensure children are fully documented, and adhere to all immigration and child protection laws. Collective vigilance and compliance are critical to protecting our children and upholding their fundamental rights, the Consul General said.
