Ruben Amorim’s team is considering bringing back a player who left a few seasons ago.
Manchester United are reportedly considering a surprise and sensational return for a player who left the club just a few seasons ago.
United will begin their Premier League campaign this afternoon when they face Arsenal at Old Trafford.
This will mark the start of Ruben Amorim’s first full season as coach of the club, after he made the move in November last year from Sporting Lisbon to replace the sacked Erik ten Hag.
United finished 15th last season, their worst ever position in the Premier League, and this season there will be no European football at Old Trafford for the first time in more than a decade.
The Old Trafford side missed out on a place in the Champions League this season after losing 1-0 in last season’s Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.
Ahead of the start of the new season, United have strengthened their attacking line, with Amorim having a new attacking trio to choose from.
Matheus Cunha arrived from Wolves, while Bryan Mbeumo has joined from Brentford, with both players expected to play in the dual number 10 roles behind the main striker.
United have also added a new goal threat in the form of Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig in a £74m deal,.
United could still strengthen some parts of the squad this summer, with areas requiring improvement including central midfield and also the goalkeeping department, where Amorim currently has choices between Andre Onana, Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton. Onana arrived from Inter Milan in 2023 for an initial fee of £43.8m, but has not convinced enough in that time.
The Cameroon international goalkeeper came in to replace United’s long-serving goalkeeper David De Gea, who left the club that summer at the end of his contract after talks over a new deal broke down under then-manager Ten Hag.
De Gea spent the following season as a free agent, before joining Italian club Fiorentina last August.
The goalkeeper – who has 45 international caps for Spain – recently returned to Old Trafford with his new team for a pre-season friendly to say goodbye to United fans.
But has he really said goodbye, as reports suggest United are considering bringing De Gea back to Old Trafford.
According to The Sun, United are making “secret” enquiries about a De Gea return, after learning he has a clause in his contract with Fiorentina that would allow him to leave for a fee described as “relatively small”.
It is reported that “secret calls are being made in the background” after the goalkeeper made a good impression in the pre-season friendly.
De Gea joined United from Atletico Madrid in 2011 and spent 12 seasons at Old Trafford, making 545 appearances for the club.
During that time, the goalkeeper won the Premier League title, the FA Cup, two League Cups and the Europa League.
