Innovation At The Heart Of Africa’s Journey To Food Security

By Taryn Browne

In Zimbabwe, as across much of Africa, food security is a pressing priority.

Maize remains the country’s staple food, yet production is often threatened by erratic weather patterns, post-harvest losses, and limited processing capacity.

Ensuring that harvested grain is stored and processed efficiently is essential to safeguarding supply and stabilising food prices.

For over 160 years, Bühler has been developing solutions that help ensure sustainable food production worldwide.

From its Johannesburg office, with service stations in Cape Town, Lusaka, and Maputo, Bühler Southern Africa is well positioned to support regional development through reliable grain storage, processing, and milling technologies.

“Our mission is innovation for a better world,” says Marco Sutter

“Our mission is innovation for a better world,” says Marco Sutter, Managing Director of Bühler Southern Africa.

“We offer a strong and trusted local presence in Africa, with a state-of-the-art workshop, local spares stockholding, and a dedicated team to help develop new process solutions and nurture fresh talent for the region.”

Bühler’s innovations are designed to directly address the agricultural challenges that shape food security.

The latest technologies in grain cleaning, roller milling, and vibration monitoring improve consistency, efficiency, and profitability for millers and food processors, while supporting long-term sustainability goals.

In animal feed, Bühler has introduced advancements such as the Granulex® 5 Series hammer mill, which offers higher throughput, reduced energy consumption, and faster changeovers.

Alongside this, digital solutions are helping producers optimise operations, increase yield, nd maintain consistent quality.

As a technology partner for the food, feed, and mobility industries, Bühler has committed to having solutions ready to multiply by 2025 that reduce energy, waste, and water by 50% in the value chains of its customers.

Alongside technology, Bühler is deeply invested in people

It also proactively collaborates with suppliers to reduce climate impacts throughout the supply chain. In its own operations, Bühler has developed a pathway to achieve a 60% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 (Greenhouse Gas Protocol Scopes 1; and 2, against a 2019 baseline).

Alongside technology, Bühler is deeply invested in people. The company’s bursary programme, educational workshops, and training initiatives are designed to equip young Africans with the skills to drive innovation in the food sector. By strengthening local capacity, Bühler ensures that the continent’s next generation of engineers and technicians can play an active role in shaping Africa’s food systems.

Through its combination of cutting-edge technology, long-term investment, and community-oriented initiatives, Bühler is reinforcing its role as a partner in building resilience and prosperity across Africa.

“We are here for the long run,” concludes Sutter. “Our aim is to help secure a sustainable future for food and agriculture in Africa.”
